Our laboratory is a clean room designed specifically for the cultivation of edible and medicinal fungi in a variety of forms. Centered around the sterile workspace created by our HEPA filters this room is effectively the beginning of much of our highly specialized work as Mycologists.

In our laboratory wild strains of properly identified fungi are brought into isolated culture through the process of cloning. Cloning fungi within the phyla Basidiomycota, commonly known as the "higher fungi", is the process where by which a piece of clean fungal tissue is extracted from the bulk matter of the desired mushroom and placed upon agar within a petri dish. The specifcally handled and extracted piece of tissue then begins to regrow over the next few days or weeks, reverting back to its vegetative state known as mycelium. This mycelium, a living threadlike "web", then spreads across the petri dish consuming the agar as its food source. If protocol is properly followed, and the technician in question is accurate in their technique, this single movement from wild mushroom to "tame" mycelium is the beginning of a very unique and vibrant relationship.

In a matter of months one sterile tissue isolation can generate thousands of pounds of mycelium through current leading edge mushroom science. Our sterile tissue laboratory is one of the cornerstones of Myriad Mycology.
